About Our Matting
When an image is properly matted, the matting serves to compliment and enhance the print. The matting leads the eye directly into the print; leaving the viewer only vaguely aware that there is matting surrounding the print. If done properly, matting can serve to enhance both the viewing pleasure of a print and its longevity.
Two Types of Matting
When you ask us to include matting with your purchased print you may select from one of two types. Our standard matting is a white core acid-free mat board that will protect your artwork for years to come. Our archival matting is a white 100% cotton museum quality mat board ideally suited for matting the finest art.
Standard Matting
Standard matting is white with a white core so there is no tell-tale discoloration on the inside bevel cut of the matting cutout. This ensures the mat board is a consistent white color and does not distract from the presentation of the artwork.
Our standard matting is treated to be acid-free to neutralize the acids that can occur in paper matting. This matting is suitable for most art that will be displayed in an informal setting or where long-term preservation of the art is not an issue. Even the best paper matting will eventually develop acids that can ultimately affect the print. With an acid-free mat paper the develop of acid within the paper is delayed for many years and is not an issue for most displayed art. However, standard matting is not appropriate for fine art that must be protected from the eventual effects of acid-development in the matting materials
Archival Matting
If you want your art to truly last a lifetime (or several lifetimes) then you should have it matted with archival matting materials. Our 100% cotton rag archival matting is arguably the industry's premier museum quality preservation mat board and will help ensure your print will remain undamaged by acids or other environmental contaminants. This is a much more costly solution than our standard matting option, but it is true conservation matting and is worth every penny if you are concerned about the longevity of your art.
Matting Embellishments
As an option you may elect to have your artwork distinctively embellished with the name of both the print and the artist placed behind a window cut into the mat board immediately below the print.
